Time to try something new.
Okay, so I'm a middle-aged woman, and, while thin most of my life, have been really struggling with my weight for the past decade (guess why?). I went low carb about five years ago, then over a year ago started doing the ketogentic way of eating. Both helped stop the gain, but getting rid of an excess thirty pounds has been a major challenge. I've walked several miles a week for years, then over a year ago added in slow-lifting weights to failure, which gave me a lot more muscle, but those blasted fat cells just won't go. After getting tested, I learned I was borderline hypothyroid, which helped explain the crumby metabolism. Further, I did way too much starvation dieting, and longer water fasting cleanses, which will slow metabolism further. So, here I am, with what looks like a great option for a disciplined person like myself. I've been reading a lot about intermittenent fasting (IF), the last few months, then came across the work of Valter Longo, at USC and Mark Mattson, at Johns Hopkins, do research on IF in relation to aging and dementia. So, as someone getting older by the second, it seemed like I might want to add IF to my primarily very low carb, mostly paleo way of eating.
I began a little over a week ago, and so far find it quite easy to go 19-22 hours fasting, with a 2-3 hour window to eat a main meal for the day. I do have a tablesppin of cream in my morning coffee, and if I felt light-headed would have another during the day. This doesn't seem restrictive, and makes life simpler. Also, if I really feel hungry, I wouldn't hesitate to eat a small salad or grab a cheese stick to hold me over. I'm no advocate of prefectionism.
Every day I drink lots (at least 2 liters) of water and plain green or black tea, along with the morming 16oz of coffee with the cream.
Results so far: I've lost about three pounds, no doubt a bit of water there, but a good start. We are leaving for vacation in a couple days, and I will continue on, though will be eating out most days, so that will be interesting.
